Postpartum Recovery Must-Haves: Pack Like a Pro for Comfort and Healing

Updated: Aug 16

Bringing a new life into the world is an incredible experience, but postpartum

recovery can be a bit overwhelming and uncomfortable, especially in the hospital

setting. Packing the right essentials can make a world of difference, and I’m here to

help you prepare for a comfortable and smooth recovery after childbirth.

Hospital-Provided Essentials

Hospitals have you covered with some basics, but knowing what they provide can

help you pack smarter. Check with your hospital before packing these items:

● Hospital Gowns: Practical for medical checks, but let’s be real, not exactly stylish.

● Mesh Underwear: Handy but not the sturdiest.

● Maxi Pads: Essential for managing postpartum bleeding.

● Peri Bottles: Gentle cleansing after bathroom trips.

● Pain Relief Medication: Provided as needed.

● Socks: To keep your feet warm and cozy.

● Perineal Spray: For soothing relief after delivery.

● Some Toiletries: Basics like soap and shampoo.

● Perineal Cold Pads: To reduce swelling and provide comfort.

● Postpartum Belly Binder: Most hospitals provide this for women who have a

Cesarean section.

Postpartum Care Essentials and Extra Touches

Taking care of your body post-delivery is crucial. Pack these items to aid in your

recovery and comfort:

● Padsicles: Prepare these with aloe vera, witch hazel, and lavender to soothe and

reduce swelling. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

● Stool Softeners: Check with your doctor, but these can make your first bowel

movements post-birth less uncomfortable.

● Moisturizing Lotions: Your skin can get quite dry postpartum, so keep it hydrated.

● Toothpaste and Toothbrush: Daily hygiene must-haves.

● Hairbrush and Hair Clips: Keep your hair manageable and out of the way.

● Lip Balm: Hospital air can be very drying.

● Nipple Cream: If you’re planning to breastfeed, this can be a lifesaver.

● Snacks: Hospital food isn’t always the most appetizing, so having some of your

favorite snacks can be comforting.

● Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key. Optionally, pack an electrolyte drink mix to

add to your water.

● Comfy Clothes and Lounge Wear: Soft, loose-fitting clothes, nursing tops, and

cozy robes are way more comfortable than hospital gowns.

● Cotton, large granny panties.

● Nursing bra

● Glasses

● Phone Charger: You’ll want to keep your phone charged for all those baby

pictures and calls to loved ones.

● Prenatal vitamins

Sleep and Rest

Rest is critical for recovery. Ensure you get quality sleep with these items:

● Noise-Canceling Headphones and Earplugs: Block out hospital noises for better

rest.

● Eyepatch: Great for napping during the day when hospital lights are bright.

Baby’s Comfort

Don’t forget items for your newborn:

● Cute Onesies and Pajamas: Hospitals provide basic clothing, but packing a

couple of adorable onesies and pajamas will be more comfortable and perfect for

photos.

● A cute swaddle blanket.

● A couple burp cloths

● Car Seat: be prepared months in advance with a properly installed car seat. You

can find help at your local CHP office or check with cert.safekids.org to find a

certified technician in your area.

Planning for the Postpartum Period

While packing all these essentials is important, planning for your postpartum period

is equally crucial. Postpartum doulas are experts at helping you prepare for this time,

and some may even offer postpartum planning and breastfeeding courses prenatally.

They’ll walk you through everything, ensuring you’re ready for both your newborn

and your recovery. This guidance can be invaluable in navigating those first few

weeks with your new baby.

Breastfeeding Support

Additionally, it’s a great idea to get in touch with an International Board Certified

Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) prenatally to schedule a consultation and develop a

connection prenatally. Although hospitals have lactation consultants, they often don’t

have the time to dedicate to each mother individually. An independent IBCLC can

provide invaluable support and advice for breastfeeding. Most major insurance

companies, such as Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Cigna, often cover these

services, so be sure to check with your provider.

Final Thoughts

Packing thoughtfully can make your postpartum recovery more comfortable and

enjoyable. Prioritize your comfort, healing, and bonding time with your new baby.

Every recovery journey is unique, so feel free to customize your bag according to

your personal needs and preferences.

Happy packing and wishing you a smooth recovery!
