Spring’s blooming in Buffalo, NY, and after this winter’s marathon, I’m loving the thaw. I’m Deanna Van Pyrz, founder of Newborn Care Services (www.newborncareservices.com), where my team of certified Postpartum Doulas and Newborn Care Specialists takes the night shift so WNY moms can rest. Thirty years ago, I wasn’t so lucky—my postpartum was a nightmare, stuck indoors for a month during a brutal winter, my mental health unraveling. Now, I’m here to make sure Buffalo families thrive, not just survive. Curious what a night nanny’s day looks like? Here’s a glimpse into my world.
Afternoon: Gearing Up
Around 6 p.m., I’m prepping—packing swaddles, red night lights, and my trusty white noise machine. Tonight’s family’s in Elmwood Village, new parents worn thin after months of snowed-in nights. I text them a quick “See you soon!”—they’re counting on me, and I’m ready.
Evening: Stepping In
By 9 p.m., I’m at their cozy home—creaky floors, a peek of Delaware Park’s budding trees. Mom’s hovering, dad’s fading, and baby’s wired. I get the rundown—feeding times, sleep quirks—then nudge them to bed. “Go rest,” I say. “I’ve got this.” They shuffle off, relieved.
Night Shift: Where It Happens
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., I’m on. Baby fusses—I swaddle tight, humming over the Southtowns wind rattling the windows. Midnight bottle, 2 a.m. diaper change—all while mom and dad sleep. I scribble notes—how baby ate, slept—so they’re in the know come morning. It’s quiet, steady work, but it’s everything.
Morning: Passing the Torch
At 6 a.m., spring light filters in. I tidy up, leave my notes, and grin as mom staggers out, stunned she slept. “You’re a lifesaver,” she says—I hear it from Hertel to Williamsville. Then I’m off, knowing they’ll enjoy a sunny Canalside day because I was there.
Why I Do This
Back then, I’d have given anything for a night nanny—someone to lift the load so I could breathe. Now, I give Buffalo families that freedom—especially in July, when summer’s too short to miss. Want to reclaim your nights? [Click here to schedule a call with me]—let’s make your summer shine.
